THEBIO

They say variety is the spice of life and it’s this philosophy that solo artist Frank Lawson took to heart while recording his new EP, Goldie.

“Music is meant to transport and inspire,” he explains. “I make music to make people feel good. It's a buffet of ecletic electronic sounds and organic live instruments. I wanted to challenge myself to be bold and different by exploring sounds and rhythms that soar beyond the cloned sounds we've heard across the airwaves.”

Collaborating with producer/songwriter Dan Whittemore, Lawson has taken moments from his own unique musical journey to bring a bold – and at times - vulnerable sound to audiences.

“I’m exposing myself, but it’s 100% Lawson,” he explains. “I call it, Lawsonsoul”.

Nicknamed Goldie after the lead character in the 1973 movie, The Mack, Lawson was raised by his mother Annette and Great-grandmother Earlene in small town Lake Worth, FL. As a child, Goldie (Lawson) already exuded unyielding sensuality, creativity and style. He was a fearless young man who loved sharing his vocal gifts whenever an opportunity was presented.

Lawson, who moved to Los Angeles from Brooklyn in 2006, says music has always been in his blood.

“My great-grandmother was definitely the most musical person in the family and the first musical influence I knew,” he remembers fondly. “As a kid, she taught me how to sing and gave me my first chance to sing publicly in the church choir.”

Listening to greats like Luther Vandross, George Michael and Frank Sinatra growing up fueled Lawson’s artistic fire and he dreamed of the day when he would also be able to infuse effortless control, sexiness, and personality into his own sound.

His passion for music led him to study communications and musical theater at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, and eventually to New York City. Although he has sung across the US, Caribbean and Europe, it wasn’t until a life-changing opportunity to travel throughout Asia in a production on RENT that Lawson really started to understand the amazing impact music has on people all over the world.

“I learned quickly that music has no language barrier, especially when it is created with - and about - love to uplift the human spirit,” he says. “I would love to tour that part of the world again singing my own music and captivating millions of minds and hearts abroad.”

It’s this world view that inspired the vibrant and unique sounds of his EP. With powerful anthems like 'The Spark', the romantic uptempo 'Come On' and the down home trumpet driven ‘Hummin’, Lawson hopes his music will touch people across the board.

“Rhythm is so important to me. It's what awakens the spirit and takes control of your body. If the drums are powerful there is no other option than to move and feel it.

After gaining a new perspective abroad, Lawson returned to L.A. where he teamed up with Whittemore. Together they are creating a unique ground-breaking sound which forces both to step outside of their musical comfort zones.

“Dan is more rock and it was this collusion of R&B, theatrics, and rock that really helped breathe new life into the music we call Lawsonsoul.”
